The JADA Philosophy: Not Just “Independence,” but “Autonomy”

The core principle that JADA has cherished throughout its 40-year history is not merely “Self-standing Independence” (Jiritsu), but true “Autonomy” (Autonomy – Juritsu).

This concept of “Autonomy” is deeply rooted in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Kant defined autonomy not as following the orders of others or fleeting desires, but as “acting according to the moral laws (rules) one has set for oneself.”

The struggle of school refusal is, in a sense, the labor pain of breaking free from “Heteronomy” (rules decided by others) to find one’s own “Autonomy.” Only when a child holds the steering wheel of their own life through autonomy can true independence follow.
